Emmie is a copywriter for Nuts & Bolts. They sell power tools and shit. As you can probably guess, they are a predominantly male company with a handful of employees. The title of the book reflects how Emmie acts a little differently when at work as opposed to when she with family/friends (ie: she "acts" tough at work). Tate handles the social media for the company and their offices are across from each other in a very small space.
This was supposed to be a hate/enemies to lovers and it was, I guess. There are going to be some spoilers- you are warned. Stop reading if you don't want spoilers.
I just thought Tate was an asshole. His "reasons" for being an asshole sucked. He just sucked and I thought Emmie just want with it because she thought he was hot. Being an "introvert" doesn't give you a pass to treat other people like shit. Emmie looking like his ex and his immature way of dealing with it (you guessed it- being a rude asshole!) just shows his character. This was way too much like that old school yard behavior; if a boy pulled your hair/picked on you, he "likes" you, instead of just chalking it up to being mean/a bully.
I also thought Emmie was way too fixated on his "paleness" and how he "glowed." Both words are used multiple times (off the top of my head at least 5 mentions, but I know there were more- and no, I'm not going back and counting, I read the paperback). Did I mention how pale Tate is and how his skin just glows?
Descriptions of Tate: "anti-social," "cold," "calculating," "hostile," "rude," "dismissive," and "passive aggressive." All awesome qualities I want in a romance hero! Win!
Lesson from this book: It's okay for a guy to be rude, dismissive, and mean to you if he secretly likes you. Oh, and if he's good looking. But only if he's hot and you secretly like him too.
