This is one of those rare , magical books that creates its own world so quietly that only when you are half way through do you realize you are entranced. It's a historical novel that has a mixture of madness, role-playing and control. There is adultry, insanity, back-stabbing and blue blood secrets. It's a tale of ambition and personal betrayal. It's the 1760s. The young king of Denmark, Christian VII, is a half-wit to be said lightly. His queen, the adulteress has fallen in love with his most trusted advisor the insane back-stabbing, court physician. Who also is a cold-blooded religious fanatic who is determined to annihilate the king. If you enjoy 18th-century reads this is an excellent one. The pace held my attention. The author, though new to me was a joy to get accquinted with. I enjoyed my time with these 18th century hooligans. Somewhat like reading about the 20th century mafia feuds....you just gotta keep reading cuz it ain't over till it's over.
