Wonderfully written, extremely creative, but I had a hard time getting into the book because there is really no one to root for. Alan Campbell has written some exquisitely disgusting and evil characters, but there are no positive characters at all. All of the protagonists are extremely dark or hopeless. He gives the term "the depths of despair" and entirely new dimension. Having said that, I found the story increasingly engrossing and ultimately couldn't put it down. The lead characters (Dill, Carnival and Rachel) were starting to become a bit more positive in the end and I have to admit that I'm looking forward to part 2. If you are a fan of China Mieville, you will probably love this book.
