The first book I've read by this author; didn't know what to expect. The cover led me to expect an average sword and sorcery/romance, but DRINK OF ME was a cut above the usual. The plot was predictable, but well carried out.
Here is a new world, more or less Medieval European, but with several races of more-or-less humans living in uneasy peace and sometimes outright war. The Sange people are reviled and persecuted by many for their unusual customs, and a remnant population of Sange refugees has built a city in the wilderness. Their culture is depicted with careful attention to detail, and the characters are more three-dimensional than many other novels of this genre.
The story starts out with the Sange leader out on a routine hunting foray; his band is ambushed and one member kidnapped by vicious barbarians of one of the other races. In rescuing their friend, the Sange discover another refugee, an injured woman suffering amnesia.
Then comes trouble...
