Being pulled from the ocean by a strange and beautiful woman would be Lev's salvation in more ways than one. He couldn't explain their connection, the way she made him feel, but he accepted it and embraced it, her. She was his miracle, his chance at life. She saw him. With her, he was real, no longer black and evil, no longer part of the shadows.
Rikki could not explain how she knew, but she knew he was not what he seemed. The dangerous aura surrounding him was just a defense mechanism. Well, maybe not just that. She was sure that killing had been part of his life before, but it didn't have to be. Here with her, he could begin again. He could have a life. He didn't have to be a ghost in the darkness. He could be the good man she saw inside.
They both had gifts that made them different. Different was unacceptable to most people, but he understood her better than she understood herself at times. Her gift of controlling water, being bound to it, did not frighten him. He simply accepted it.
But Rikki feared letting anyone too close. The fires of her childhood haunted her. What if she had started the fires that killed people and destroyed so much? She didn't believe she did, but what if she were wrong? Supposing she did it in her sleep or something? She worried about the people she loved. Nothing could happen to them because of her. She just couldn't take one more death like that.
Could he help her? Would he be hurt?
Maybe together they could survive.
