I began this book out of sequence and now I can't wait to read the first one. This book had a compelling story that held me captive the entire book.
This book is about a marquess by the name of Hayden St.Clair and Carlotta Anne Fairleigh. Many years before Hayden's wife died under strange circumstances. It was never known how or why but because she died after Hayden's duel with his best friends it was thought to have been done by his own hands. After Hayden's wife death he was called dubbed the "Murderous Marquess".
During a short visit in London Carlotta was in residence next door. After she finds out that he was staying next door her curiosity get's the better of her and she decides to leave her coming out debut ball to take a peak at him. I mean the house was suppose to be abandoned, it was always dark, who wouldn't want to check it out. Certainly one small peek through his window before the festivities would be harmless ... Naturally, her latest adventure ends in disaster when Hayden unfortunately mistakes Carlotta for a hired lady of the night, that he believed his friend was implying that he was going to send and they are caught in a compromising situation. In order to keep her brother in law from fighting to the death in a dual she presents herself to Hayden and convinces him to marry her.
Now betrothed and suddenly married she's now en route to the wilds of Cornwall in the company of the handsome, mysterious marquess whose name the ton whisper with fear and loathing. Yet there is something thrilling --- and surprisingly tender --- about her dark, unreachable husband, and the desire in his eyes is undeniable. But it's not enough to see his desire for her in his eyes, she wants to hold his heart, but in order to have it she must unlock the secrets of Hayden's past, no matter how scandalous --- or perilous --- they may be.
