The American Cocker Spaniel was bred from the English Cocker Spaniel and is smaller. There were working dogs, but now they are mostly pets. They have various amounts of fur. We had AKC Cocker Spaniels for 20+ years. People getting heavily-furred Cocker Spaniels need to understand they have extensive grooming needs. The author neglected to mention this fact, which is unfortunate. Many unaware dog owners get rid of this breed because of this large time factor.

Fifty years ago, American Cocker Spaniels were the most popular dogs in this country. However, dogs needing less grooming (such as Black Labrador Retrievers) have become the most popular. Overall score = G+.
