I think what made the book for me was Echo and Cora. Both of them had so much strength and honnesty. I think Echo was a little bit sweeter than Cora but the two mirrored each other quite a bit.
Reading about Rance from the other books, I never did like him but he did redeemed himself nicely. I can understand his need to bury himself in work and neglecting his daughters after the death of his wife. He was slow to learn his lessons in life. I love the dynamics between Rance and Echo from the very first scene together. Without Echo, I wouldn't like Rance as much.
Good, quick read with some touching parts.
