I read this book a few years after it came out, and I loved it. I read all of the books in the series, waiting patiently for them as they came out.Last year, I re-read this book...and realized just how...horribly written it is. The main character, Bella Swan, is a huge Mary-sue, and so is her love interest (and abusive boyfriend, no matter how you try to deny it!) Edward Cullen. The style isn't very good, and reads like a grocery list at times, explaining every little detail of Bella's daily life to us, that we couldn't care less about. It is also laced with purple prose that get really annoying after time.
The plot is cliché and comes in much too late in the book (Most of the book filled with Bella complaining about everything, and Edward and Bella looking into each others eyes, arguing about who loves each other more). SMeyer seems to have a very incompetent editor, if you notice all the grammatical mistakes, poorly misused words, and at one point, a spelling mistake.
She basically murdered the idea of Vampires, to the point where they're clearly unrecognizable besides the drinking blood. They sparkle, they have no fangs, They can't be killed by stakes, holy water, silver bullets, they don't have to be invited into your home to come in, they have a reflection, garlic doesn't bother them, they don't burn in the sun (THEY SPARKLE). They are NOT vampires, SMeyer just wanted to stick with the species that the boy in her dream was without changing him to fit it.
A lot of other things I could mention, but it is overall the worst book I've ever had the displeasure to read, along with the rest of the series.
