Second in the Alex Benedict series, makes some references to the first book, but you don't need to have read it to enjoy this. I liked the switch of POV to Chase Kolpath. The plot again unfolds sedately, but I liked the pacing nonetheless. Benedict and Kolpath go from one tiny clue to another, with the reader realizing what must be happening along with Benedict. Not as much "history" jammed into this book as the last one, but enough for the reader to get a sense of just how far future this is. Minor quibble: after Benedict's skimmer got sabotaged in the last book, not to mention his house AI, I would have expected him to install some really good security. But no, he and Kolpath cheat death THREE TIMES in this book after someone tampers with their transport. Only then do they decide they better take precautions! Still, good readable plot, good characters, good world-builing, but a leisurely pace.
