Assumption is a collection of three novella-length accounts of criminal activities in and around Plata, New Mexico. The tales feature loner Deputy Ogden Walker and his investigation of these mysteries. One reviewer noted that âthe stories borrow and repurpose some material from at least one short story in Half an Inch of Water, except they take place in New Mexico and Colorado instead of Wyoming.â Since I haven't read it you may want to check it out and see.

Walker is a rare black man in white/Hispanic/Indian country who doesnât really like what he does. Adverse to carrying a gun, he feels, furthermore, that he isn't very good at investigating crimes. Nor does he have a real personal life yet he eats at his mother's table and goes fly fishing with his cohorts. This eccentric lawman appears to be the only connecting element in the stories but is it really? But, who knows? You may find that that the collection is actually one connecting various murders and acts of violence with interesting characters.

Many readers really enjoy Everett's work and comment on his writing style. One work was mentioned frequently: Erasure: A Novel , and you may want to put it on your reading list. I did.
