These was another best in this series. This series is getting better and better, I could not have put this book down. I was caught up in the action and the emotions coming off of Zarek what his torment and what his live was like and how Kenyon pulls you into his background makes you feel sorry for what his childhood was like.
Zarek has been the only Dart Hunter that has a death wish and would rather die then deal with people around him. He was a slave since the moment he was born and was unwanted even by his mother and later unwanted by his father. Zarek was the whipping boy that his father's soldiers used as well as his own father. He was beaten so badly that he was close to blindness and broken bones that were never set when they healed, he was malformed from this cruelty as a whipping boy. Even his own half brothers found reason to beat him. Later on his own father sold his as a slave and later as a watch man for a noble woman that brought him and then certain event played out and he was killed for what had happened to the women. He is the only D. H. that got to keep his soul cuz Artemis didnt want to even touch him to claim his soul. All the time he was in banishment in Alaska he had no one and no one wanted to around him, let a lone trust him. After he was sent back to Alaska after New Orleans, he had many people out to kill him for what happened around Mardi Gras. Zarek has squires and a peed off Daimon as Death. On his side is a only D.H. he calls friend and that Jessup/ Sundown, hes there to protect Zarek from getting killed before his judgement is tested.
Astrid a justice nymph is there to judge Zarek as a impartial judge for her mother, her sister the 'Fates', her cousin Artemis as well as for Ash, shes there to judge him for his so called crimes that he committed in his life time. Little did Astrid. She is temporary blind for her to judge her charge and his relying on her wolf companion to help her do her job. She never expected for her job to become so impossible. She has never judge anyone like Zarek before and she is at her wits end when he dont want to talk or helped or even to cook for. She finds her self wanting to find a way to see what has come to his pasted and see if she can find a way for him to talk so she can judge. Astrid finds her self caring for him as a man and not a someone she has to judge for death. She helps him in more ways then she through possible. She gets him to open up and she heals his wounds and he in turn helps heal her of a emotionless heart.
We also see more of what Ash has to deal with for his D.H. and see how his and Artemis 'relationship', what she fears and what more he hides behind his sliver eyes.
