It's the swimming pool. It should never have been dug, but it was before the stock market crash, NYC societies families all had country homes and parties around the swimming pool. But the crash happened, a businessman commits suicide. His family is destitute, they sell their NYC place but keep their summer home with the swimming pool. Fast forward 20 years and a dead body is found in the pool. One of the family members, the beauty socialite who married money, is haunted, locking herself in her room, behaving strangely. More murders, but who's doing it and why?

Mary Roberts-Rinehart is the queen of the twisted who-done-its. Her books are not historical mysteries. They were written during that time period. These are excellent examples of how a gripping mystery is written with the minimum of CSI technology. It amazes me that these books were written on a manual typewriter!

If you're looking for CLASSIC mysteries, her books rank with Conan Doyle in rich plots and tormented twists.
