It takes place in the future, a dystopian future where life lacks the luxuries of earlier years. There is no oil, few cars are being driven, roads are not maintained very well and electricity is scarce. Yet this is a story of hope and survival led by sixteen-year-old "Handsome Molly" who plays a mean fiddle to relieve stress. In addition, she cheers others with her lively music.

When a disrupted phone call reaches her family, her mother is certain that Molly's grandmother has died. Someone must go to the mainland to rescue grandfather. Molly volunteers because her pregnant mother needs a doctor to see her through a difficult pregnancy. Molly's adventures begin at this point.

In spite of a dismal environment the story is positive and uplifting. Molly's attitude is almost always upbeat and when it isn't she picks up her fiddle and plays song after song. She just knows she can do all she is expected to do. There are surprises when she reaches the mainland both good and bad. She encounters an interesting young man with a criminal-like job who helps her in many ways. It's a good, good story for YA readers. I recommend it highly.
