P.C. Doherty sets the era, the rules of the King, Parliament, and Church in the Prologue. From there, he writes the history in such a way that pulls you into the story and the lives of the characters, their interactions, and their antagonists. Sometimes, you see the English as rather barbaric in their punishments for those who don't agree with them.
In all the books I have read by P.C. Doherty (and his pseudonyms who wrote other books), he uses historical fact interwoven into his fiction, too. This non-fiction book shows the depth of his research into these times. And, at the end, he gives his opinion and reasons to back it up. I give the book 5 stars.
