Book Review of A House with Four Rooms

A House with Four Rooms
reviewed on

Rumer Godden is one of my favorite authors. This is the second volume of her autobiography, the first being A Time to Dance, No Time to Weep.
This second volume begins with her at age thirty-eight, arriving back from India with her two small daughters to find England battered by WWII and with rationing in force. She describes London of the late 1040s and the literary and publishing world there. She remarries, visits America, revisits India to advise while a movie is being made, describes farm life in the English countryside, her theatrical friends, and finally, she moves to a house that was once the home of Henry James.
