Things were looking up for Mr. Sharpe at the end of the previous book in this series chronologically. However, it crashes for him with his promotion to Captain refused, new officers, and an old, old enemy reappearing. There are graphic descriptions of taking a very strong fort without a long siege. "There's more bloody powder under that glacis than Guy Fawkes dreamed of (114)." I was reading this on Guy Fawkes Day and no one I encountered mentioned it in passing. I imagine it will be the same tomorrow, Armistice Day, and I will encounter no one remembering the vets of WWI.
He does now enjoy a widening reputation as a warrior.
