Somerset Maugham wrote a short story that was so good it was made into a movie, not once, but three times. "Rain" is about the clash between a prostitute and a missionary. He says he wants to save her soul and uses some harsh methods to gain her cooperation. Ms Sadie Thompson is down, but not out. Contains five more short stories and two short, but evocative, essays.
Maugham (1874-1965) led many lives, including that of a doctor in London's slums, a successful playwright and novelist (his "Of Human Bondage" was also made into a movie twice), an agent for British intelligence during WWI, and a world traveler. Considering the advice to 'write what you know,' Maugham knew an awful lot!
