The second volume of The Deptford Trilogy follows the story of attorney David Staunton, who is facing a breakdown upon the sudden death of his father. To get help, he turns to Jungian psychology and visits a therapist in Zurich. Davies uses a variety of narrative devices to explore Jungian archetypes, such as The Friend, The Anima, and The Shadow. He also preaches the importance of choosing one's beliefs and values, and emphasizes the power of sacrifice and love. The novel is full of eccentric characters and witty dialogue, and Davies' prose is smooth and entertaining.
