Book Review of Going Hungry: Writers on Desire, Self-Denial, and Overcoming Anorexia

Going Hungry: Writers on Desire, Self-Denial, and Overcoming Anorexia
reviewed Got me Reading Again on

I have never really had a keen interest in books like my parents or some of my friends. My reading comprised of school material and required literature that was considered classical. All of the books I read were to be analyzed and then I would tested on the novel. Reading was not seen as a past-time or a fun activity until I started this book. It was so real and relatable. Since I am around the age of many of the girls and boys going through this delicate, self-conscious age, I felt a connection and understood many of their words moreso than I would take advice from someone not my peer. I could literally not put this book down. The stories are about recovery and not looking for sympathy. It is a book that looks at the disease in a personalized way which is different from how I percieved anorexia from my previous knowledge. Many of the things I hear about anorexia come from the magazines or health class that make it sound very vague and fictional. This book brought out all the deep emotions of the various authors and I found the book moving and unique. I really enjoyed this book and was sad when I read the last chapter because the experience of enjoying a book for pleasure was over for the time being. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling for inner peace.
