It's a decent first novel in a series in which the three children of a murdered emperor must save themselves from a sprawling conspiracy set in a fantasy world. One son is in training to a elite military squad ( much like The Black Watch). The daughter is government official ( channeling Princess Amidala type characters) as she tried to solve her fathers murder . The third child is a young monk in training ( as seen in Kung Fu, Jedi Knights and countless other stories ) as he is tries to master his emotions, learn the secrets of his ancestors...yada, yada.
There are many familiar tropes at work and the two male characters have fairly interesting story arcs, but the book is basically a set up for the next books, so not much is resolved...but there is potential for some interesting world building.
It's not going to surpass Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings....but it's has lots of interesting concepts/potential but it fell short in some areas...making it average ( but enjoyable) reading
