On the eve of his death, Enzo, a dog with a very human soul and a desire for opposable thumbs, takes stock of his life and the people in it. We see and feel the events of his owner's life as only a dog could feel them. We feel the rush as Denny, Enzo's race car driver owner, takes him on a "hot lap"; learn the intricacies of racing through the things Denny tells Enzo; feel the pain of watching a mistress die and an owner grieve and the confusion and sorrow of seeing the people you love go through a battle for custody of a child.

The author never varies from his canine viewpoint but somehow, through the sweet, gentle soul of a dog we learn about racing, and love, and life.

Anyone who has loved a dog will like this book, and may look a bit differently at their pets after reading it.
