I read this book in preparation for a trip to Provence. Once I actually got to Provence, I learned more about the book by being in the actual setting. Comic tragedies, one novel follows on the heels of the other. As greed overtakes the uncle and nephew of a local leading family that appears to be dying out, provincial prejudice against outsiders leads an entire town to participate in the tragedy of a small family that moves into town to enjoy the rural life. In the second novel, the daughter Manon wreaks her own vengeance on those who wronged her family, but eventually reconciliation of all parties results.

Very nicely written. I couldn't put the novels down until I had finished both. Now I need to see the movies.
