Still recovering from the discovery of her husband's infidelity, Rachel invites a girlfriend with problems of her own to accompany her on a business trip to Rome. A chance encounter leads to a romantic one night stand, but Rachel returns home determined to give her marriage a second chance. She and her successful husband have begun to move into their city's elite social circles, but Rachel is increasingly drawn into her former friend's dark problems, until her whole life - job and marriage - are once again threatened. And then in one shattering evening, no one will ever be the same.
