This was one of the books we read in 8th grade English in the late 1950s (GUSD). As my family has been in the Far West for generations, I can testify to its authenticity. Many of our neighbors and family had 'been there' as that time was so relatively recent, as if a writer today was recalling growing up in President Carter's days.
The long wish list is surprising to me--so many were sold then, let alone the reprints, and every library in Glendale had his books as he built his career....
