This is one of my favourite children's books ever, even though, now that I'm an adult, there are some plot problems that bother me. Nine-year-old Audrey has recently lost her mother to cancer when she meets a beautiful stray collie. She names him Shadows, but he refuses to play with her if she's not alone. The story of Shadows' origins, and how he helps Audrey begin to come to terms with her mother's death, is poignant and just ethereal enough to delight readers of ghost stories.
Now that I'm 23, not five, the resolution of the book - or rather, the lack thereof - bothers me, but the writing is truly beautiful.
