This book had an unexpected affect on me. Today as I read about more soldiers dying in Afghanistan, I was so deeply saddenned and hopeful for the safe return of the countless remaining. Not that I hadn't felt this way before, but this book drew pictures for me that have intensified my concern for our soldiers safety and hope for the Afghan people as well.
The Apostle, while the story is fictional, can help your basic American understand a little better what many patriots are doing "out in the field" to help secure our safety and freedom at home. This is the unexpected part of the book.
The expected part includes lots of suspense, action, and heavy duty weapons about which the author describes in (sometimes unnecessary) detail.
It was a pretty good read, but the lasting effects were the most profound aspect of the book to me.
