It took a second try to get past the first 50 pages of this book; it seemed like Our Hero was going to be a complete twit and waste of time. But Jody Lynn Nye is a talented author, so I tried again and I'm glad I did. There are two threads to the story, and it takes quite a while for them to come together for the main part of the plot.

Ensign Lord Thomas Kinago, son of the First Space Lord and kin to the Emperor, infuriates his first commander the moment they meet; but he perseveres through his punishment detail, makes friends with his fellow ensigns, and turns a routine inspection of a small local militia into the capture of a space pirate ship. Then he is sent to find a missing diplomat and uncovers a plot to take over a major planetary system within the Empire.

I finished the book and was wondering if there'd be a sequel, just to find out what this guy could do next.
