While certainly a nice love song to this small area of Scotland, this book is just too personal to read comfortably. First off, it's in present tense, which irks me no end. Then, she uses second person, which also drives me to distraction. Finally, she writes in such an intimate style that I felt like I was reading a diary. While normally I get a vicarious thrill from reading diary-style books, this one just made me cringe.

Most annoying, though, is her constant use of her OWN writing from her books as little blurbs in between sections of writing. I've never seen a more egotistical style than that! Yes, we know that you wrote other books. Quit sticking in passages here and there. We get it!

Having complained, though, I have to admit that I have never traveled to this part of Scotland and found her descriptions of the land itself very compelling. She is clearly a big fan of The Homeland and writes accordingly. However heavenly Scotland may be, however, it's NOT Heaven itself, though Higgs would have us believe it is.

Much better to read the Rough Guide to Scotland than this.
