Woody Monroe is as good as dead. If Dixie Lee doesn't get him, his cousin Seth will. After all, the low-life left Dixie at the altar and absconded with $5,000 of Seth's money that he'd borrowed for the wedding. With vengeance in mind, Seth and Dixie set out after Woody. But no decent journey is without its side trips, and this one is no exception. Blazing a trail through Florida, Oklahoma, and Washington, Dixie and Seth manage to take on passengers: Tripp, an ultrapolite (albeit armed) hitchhiker, and Addie, a mysterious bayou girl who's fleeing a powerful man. A quirky cast of secondary characters, including a sheriff whose best friend is a rooster, further enliven the tale. Running jokes include Dixie's creative adjectives for her absent almost-groom and her rather militant approach to being a pediatric nurse. Written along the vein of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and The Great Race, this fast-paced, frenetic, freewheeling farce will delight readers who relish madcap romps. Shelley Mosley
