There certainly are some things of worth under the winking Luther cartoon on the cover, but I fear that the considerable chaff encountered in this book may hide the few usable kernels of wheat. The editors hope to make the subject of Lutheran identity, culture, and practice accessible to one as yet outside the group's inner circles. However, the humor employed will rarely be understood by anyone but those who have been part of the Lutheran culture for years. Thus, this book is ineffective as a handbook= its stated purpose.

The cover is embellished with the moto: "here we stand" hearkening to the famous statement of confession made by Luther before his accusers. Where Luther stood on the solid foundation of Scripture. "The Lutheran Handbook" stands on the shifting sands of opinion, conjecture, and popularity.

Read with a BEvERage in hand, and even then, it should be read with caution.
