The narrator has a dream. In it he refers to himself as mahatma: a great-souled person with preternatural powers. In his dream, at the pearly gates he meets a hare: the only animal awaiting entry. This is the hares story, or how Peter Rabbit met his end at the hands of MacGregor. Surely this is an allegory that only a fervent pedagogue can relate to reality.
