This was a great book; a real tear-jerker.
Charley Benetto has ruined his life. He has become a self-absorbed and distant alcoholic, so much so that his daughter doesn't even invite him to her wedding. Feeling like he has nothing left to live for, Charley drives back to his hometown to end his life, the town where he lived when his father left his mother and his anger towards his mother started. Before he dies though, he sees his mother again, although that's impossible, since his mother died years ago. He is confused, and filled with guilt and shame, but is given one more day with her to correct some of the wrongs from his past and understand more about his mom and her life.
