Although I was initially intimidated by its length, I flew through this book! The story is about a murder that takes place in a full contact haunted house, very closely resembling the early years of McKamey manner before the latter really went off the rails. Chapters alternate between descriptions of what happens to the 4 players in various stages of the haunt and focusing on indivdual players or other people in their lives who in some way influenced their decisions to participate.
What drew me initially and later kept me flipping the pages were the depth and realness of the characters. Two of the players are white, one is Black, and one is Thai, and the murder plot is secondary to what turns out to be a sensitive examination of racial identity, prejudice, and the universal experiences of lonliness, insecurity and loss.
4.5 stars because I found the ending a bit abrupt.
