This scholarly volume reads like a college thesis. Some of the chapters sound as though a teacher had instructed, "Compare and contrast Laura Ingalls Wilder to Frederick Jackson Turner" or, "Defend Wilder's stance on Native Americans." Once I pushed through the intellecutal tone of the book, I did find bits of information I have not found in other books on the subject. More than other books, this one goes into Rose's views on Albania, and even includes a sketch of the dream house she wished to build there.

The book is informative as a text book, but I don't recommend for the idly curious or for younger readers.
