This was an amazing start to a series. It's a war-torn world with refugees and orphans, dark and light magic. We follow Alina who was orphaned and sent to live with a Duke who took in orphans, fed, clothed and educated them and prepared them to take their place in the world by learning a trade or joining the first army. The first army is full of re"regular" soldiers, while the second army is full of magic (or science) users called Grisha. Alina grew up with her best friend Mal and they did everything together, even became soliders for the first army. During a trip into The Fold, a place in the world covered in darkness and haunted by vicous creatures--a place created by a Grisha gone bad centuries ago--they are attacked. When Mal is nearly killed, Alina's grisha power makes itself known.

After that she is and Mal are torn apart, and she is taking to the King's palace to train to use her power as the ONLY Sun Summoner. With her power, it is possible to destroy the fold and unite the country of Ravka (which is separated by the Fold).

So many twists and turns. There are times when I want to shake characters and hug them. I enjoyed the characters and was taken in by some. The story kept me insterested and engaged. I'm only sorry it too me so long to read.
