This is book six in J.R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. In my opinion it is the weakest of the series so far, simply because it's too much of everything.
Warrior Phury has agreed to act as the Primale of his species-basically, his task is to sire future warriors like himself by mating with the chosen females. Cormia is to be his first mate of the lot. His role as Primale is complicated by the fact that he has romantic feelings for Cormia, and does not with to mate with anyone else.
What little romance there was was actually quite nice. Cormia and Phury fit well together. Phury is selfless and giving, and Cormia has a kind of quiet strength and inner-defiance.
Seeing Phury overcome his inner-demons was satisfying and emotional. It was also fairly realistic and un-sugarcoated. Once again Ward does not shy from even the toughest issues.
Probably the best parts, unfortunately, were those that centered around other characters. Old characters like Wrath, Zsadist, John Matthew, etc. continue to develop and interact. Theres a lot of action surrounding these characters as well, and it's very entertaining.
Phury is an addict, and unfortunately addicts don't make very emotionally attractive heroes. He is lovable, yes, and as a reader you feel for him and want him to get better. But he spends most of the book feeding his addiction, and then recovering from it, and so we don't get to see much of him as a complete, loving, open person worthy of finding his soul-mate.
The core plot is not very appealing. Although the circumstance of Phury as Primale initially seems like an intriguing obstacle, in fact it just becomes one more ridiculous issue for the couple to overcome. There is too much conflict, and it becomes difficult to see why and how the couple fell in love.
Overall, while it may be the least exciting of the series, this book still stands well above the curve in it's genre. It manages to deliver action and mystery, fun and sexy characters, and a little taste of romance.
