With her life and that of her baby threatened, Maggie grabs her baby and what she can carry, and runs. She jumps on an open box car at the train station, where she meets Rafe Kendrick. Rafe has been bumming around the country since the death of his wife and children a year past, and has become an alcoholic. Each of them needs the other to survive.
