Kate Nash Blackburn and her sisters have been left pennyless by her fathers death. She travels to northern Scotland in hopes of gaining the gratitude and patronage of a wealthy marquis. She becomes stranded, and is rescued by Kit MacNeill who years ago pledged to help her family because he owed her father a debt. Someone wants her dead. She turns to Kit and finds more than whe bargained for.
