A very different writing style of an Adventurer!
Peter Fleming writes with a flare of mild sarcasm in his observations and his true feelings of situations that they encounter; the sarcasm is not harsh, it actually brings humor into the telling. Not a typical "weekend warrior" mentality, this adventure is full of mishaps, blunders and a realistic account of day to day struggles as well as a few triumphs.
If you want a knuckle-whitening,edge of your seat page turner...this is not it! It is however a page turner that keeps you wondering if something will eventually play-out in favor of this expedition! LOL I LOVED IT.
Basically, I was in awe of the true Adventure of the whole thing. Not much planning, a lot of preparation and they went off into uncharted territory only to have all their "preparations" left to the wayside from the very start and the "planning" was very soon found to be a complete disaster.
Fleming opened up a world to me which no one will never see in this day and age and for that I will be trying to obtain more of his works.
I LOL'd quite a bit, I shook my head in exasperation with his descriptions of their obvious differences in culture and yes, I could actually sympathize (while giggling) as if it were all happening today and the man was telling me of these accounts first-hand.
After reading the final lines and closing the book, I was left with the feeling "I wish I had known this man."
