Out of 5 stars, I can only give this book 3 for this reading experience. The first half of this book made me squeamish, the second half was unsettling for an entirely different reason.
You have to expect nauseating details in books that concern kids trying to break every bone in their body. But I had to keep putting the thing down and thinking of other things. I'm naturally squeamish, but also naturally empathetic and a bit of a medical wuss, so there were details that were too much for me and may be too much for readers in the audience that this book is targeted at. Life isn't all perfect and beautiful, and this book certainly doesn't try to hide that grit, but it can be too much.
And then the inaccuracies strike you.
That brings me to the unsettled feelings in the remainder of the book. Not only were there inaccuracies and things that slipped by good editing in the first half, but the second half contained inaccuracies in facts, and inconsistencies in characters and their motivations. The author desperately needed to do some research and to delve into the motivations of characters. Very disjointed.
But, for a high school age author... par for course.
