It was a surprise to learn that Canada was part of the Underground Railroad and that the famous railroad started as early as 1831. The Underground Railroad helped as many as 100,000 escape bondage from slavery. Harriet Tubman is probably the most famous of the midnight travelers who helped others escape slavery.

I read this in a single sitting because the story was so interesting. I had no idea that Harriet Tubman nursed Civil War casualties and also served as an effective spy for the Union army. Fortunately, Harriet lived long enough to receive accolades for her many years of service to America. She died at 91-years-of-age, in a home for African Americans that she helped create.
