This is a stand-alone published by Hard Case Crime. It's got a Mickey Spillane type of cover and the description reads, in part, "With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's THE MALTESE FALCON...". IMO, rather distant echoes. This is a good, interesting story with King's excellent characters and dialogue, but it seems a long way from hard-boiled to me. The entire story is two old newspapermen recounting the tale of finding a dead body, and what came after, to a young staff writer. It's very cool and I loved the ending, although I'm glad not too many mystery novels end that way.
