Book Review of Worship and Service Hymnal

Worship and Service Hymnal
reviewed on

A nicely-bound traditional hymnal, first published by Hope Publishing Company of Carol Stream, Illinois in 1957, and popular enough to receive regular reprintings since then. We purchased a set of these after reading Carol Blair's article on hymns and hymnbooks. Carol Blair rated Hope's Worship and Service Hymnal as the hymnbook with the best selection of older hymns (including, for instance, one from Bernard of Clairvaux in the 6th century). In addition, there is an excellent selection of newer traditional hymns as well. What you will NOT find in this volume are late 20th century hymns, such as those by Andrae Crouch, John Peterson, etc. The back of the hymnal includes a nice selection of indexes, as well as an extensive list of Scripture readings, organized by topic (e.g., The Great Commission, The Holy Spirit, Calls to Worship, etc.).
