I was amazed (and saddened) at learning of the hatred toward the black race in Oregon in the early 1900's. As most people, I have always been aware of the hatred in the south, but to read about it so far north was surprising to me. This story is well told and very engaging. The book is about inequality and power struggles but also about friendships that cross color lines and gender norms. I highly recommend this book. Lyndsay Faye is a powerful historical fiction writer and I've enjoyed every book I've read of hers.
