The stories are: The Teeth, In the Graveyard, The Green Ribbon, In A Dark, Dark, Room, The Night it Rained, The Pirate, and The Ghost of John. They are taken from traditional folk tales and songs and reinterpreted as children's stories.
My three-year-old was thrilled with this book. At Halloween, she wanted us to tell her scary stories, so I got her this creepy bedtime story book. She let us read her one story, then put it up on the shelf for three weeks. Now she asks for it whenever she is in the mood for a scary story, and she loves being fun-scared by this book. She especially loves telling us the "In A Dark, Dark Room" story in the car, stretching it out with her own details (and lots of accidental repetition). Kids love being scared, and this book is a gentle introduction to the horror genre. The illustrations are charming too.
I would recommend reading this book yourself before reading it to your child or giving it to your child to read. My daughter has a high tolerance for scary stories -- much, much, much higher than I had at her age. Some children may find the scarier stories to be too much to handle, and it's probably a good idea for the caregiver to determine his or her child's readiness to prevent anyone from being too scared to sleep. ;-)
