Nice cover, wretched book. I hated it.

Are this book's characters meant to be sympathetic? I can't remember the last time I encountered such a cast of loathsome people. They're relentlessly materialistic. Money and social striving form the fabric of their lives.

Yes, Chinese people are practical. But this book portrays Chinese-Americans at their very worst - conniving, grasping and always trying to outdo one another. If you think that sounds like a racist stereotype, it's not coming from me, but from the book.
