For those who have read others of the Dirk Pitt series, you already know that Dirk has the knack to jump in where he shouldn't and to come through all scrapes with a miraculous outcome. That doesn't mean he isn't a likeable character. On the contrary, all of the regular characters are busy tying tiny threads of familiarity to us, and we feel like insiders.
The book includes a series of pre-stories to set up the adventure. We begin in Japan in the 12th century, then Hawaii, China, Mongolia, Siberia. Once Dirk appears, 65 pages in, he seldom leaves the story as he saves the day time and again.
This is a feel good book that twines some real history into a contemporary story with many twists and turns; some predictable and some not. It is an easy read, but runs 550 pages. Enjoy this book as you would a meal of your favorite comfort foods.
