Recommending "The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta. Listened to it on CD - sad that it's over. You really do go through an emotional journey listening to this story.

It centers around two families - Kevin (the town mayor), his wife, and their 2 children, Jill and Tom. The second family is Nora - she is alone because her husband and both of her children vanished. No one's lives remain the same as they were and they all try to cope and get on but it's harder for some than others.
Strange cults arise and add much humor to the story - one is a man named Holy Wayne who cures people by hugging them and a group called the Guilty Remnant who aren't as pure as they seem.
