I'm actually sitting her stunned by how much I liked this book. Frank has been hit or miss with me for a while and I hadn't been optimistic but this totally worked for me.
Docia is almost killed and agrees to take on a Bodywalker, a group of Nightwalkers that enter people who have almost died and "blend" with the host into a new person. They are separate and the same which I found fascinating.
Docia's Bodywalker is thought to be the Queen but she's not quite what she seems. The book avoids the tropes that drive me crazy like insta love/lust in the first 20 pages, over manipulation, a society and hierarchy that intends to use and manipulate her. Docia's Bodywalker is also wonderfully sweet and together make a great pair.
I also liked Ram/Victor. Ram is just perfect, not an overbearing jerk, he pushes her gently when needed but treats her well all the time. Hes attracted to Docia but shes his queen, meant for Menes so he keeps his distance. Its when we meet Victor that things get interesting and he comes in at just the right time to move the story along.
I appreciated how Frank didn't dump info background into each chapter but let it flow through the entire book.
The book also carries on a side story with Docia's brother Jackson which is also well written and one could only wish for a brother as loyal as he.
I kept waiting as I read to be either bored or irritated but neither happened. I really hope the next book is just as good.
